The Sami-Sabinsa Group recently opened a new unit for manufacturing herbal products and ingredients at the Pharma SEZ Industrial Area in Hassan, Karnataka, India. This is the second unit in Hassan, following the establishment of an NSF GMP-certified unit in the area that produces active pharmaceutical ingredients.

Anju Majeed, PhD, executive chairperson of the Sami-Sabinsa Group, and other senior managers and employees were joined by Shri Dr. H. D. Ranganath, a member of the Legislative Assembly in Kunigal, to mark the opening of the facility.

“The new production facility in Hassan will strengthen our ability to serve customers worldwide with both patented and off-patent herbal products. It is also expected to significantly enhance the Sami-Sabinsa Group’s export performance and contribute to a strong increase in company revenue.”

The new facility spans 15 acres, produces zero liquid discharge, and has been designed with a focus on user comfort, energy efficiency, responsible water management, and biodiversity enhancement, the company reported. It is fully compliant with cGMP standards and regulatory requirements, and is expected to employ about 250 people in and around Hassan. Approximately 30-40% of the property’s land has been reserved for future expansion.

The new facility was constructed for $15 million and will support the Sami-Sabinsa Group’s expansion of ingredients and products. The two facilities provide convenient access to ports on India’s east and west coasts.

Sustainability Features

The facility maintains a green belt which covers more than 30% of the total area. It is supported by utilities, including vacuum systems, cooling and chilling compressors, steam boilers, and generators that provide 100% power backup. Both units operate effluent treatment plants. Effluents are segregated into dedicated collection tanks for LTDS/HTDS, which are processed through a multiple-effect evaporator (MEE) system to achieve zero liquid discharge. No effluent is released outside of the facility. Separate rainwater channels and harvesting pits have been implemented for effective water management.
