Hair growth supplement brand Nutrafol recently launched Nutrafol Men 50+, which it reports to be the first hair growth product specifically formulated for men aged 50 years and older.

Contrary to generalized hair support products, the formula is designed specifically for age-related, biological changes in midlife responsible for hair thinning.

“At Nutrafol, our mission has always been to support people through every phase of life,” said Cindy Gustafson, CEO of Nutrafol. “We’ve long understood that hair health evolves with life stage. As men enter their fifties and beyond, their biology shifts in meaningful ways, yet options on the market rarely shift with them. Nutrafol Men 50+ was created to close the gap, addressing the age-related drivers of thinning and extending the same life-stage, whole-body approach that has transformed women’s hair health to men.”

As men enter their fifties, their testosterone decreases by approximately 20%, collagen production slows, cellular aging accelerates, oxidative stress increases, and nutrient absorption becomes less efficient. Changes in stress and hormones are also influential, Nutrafol reports, altering how hair can renew, strengthen, and respond to daily stressors.

“Hair thinning isn’t a one size fits all, and men over 50 experience a distinct shift in hair biology that requires a different approach,” said Dr. Heather Woolery-Lloyd, chief medical advisor. “Nutrafol Men 50+ is specifically formulated to multi-target these age-related root causes from within. By supporting the body’s changing biology, we can help men maintain the hair they have while promoting visibly fuller, healthier-looking growth.”

In a consumer survey by the company, 50% of men over the age of 50 said that maintaining their hair is important, and 54% report that their hair isn’t as full as it used to be.

Nutrafol’s physician-formulated vegan supplement features saw palmetto to help reduce conversion of testosterone to DHT; Moldavian Dragonhead to promote natural collagen production in the body; spermidine to improve hair thinning via improvements in markers of cellular aging and senescence; and a targeted blend of probiotics, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals to replenish common nutrient gaps in men 50 years and older.

In an internally-conducted study of middle-aged men, nine months of supplementation was associated with improvements in hair thickness and fullness in 84% of participants, and 90% reported slowed hair thinning after treatment, Nutrafol reported.

Nutrafol Men 50+ is also NSF Certified for Sport, providing third-party assurance that it is free from banned substances or masking agents, or unsafe levels of contaminants. The certification ensures that supplements’ contents are accurate to what is claimed on a label, and that it was manufactured at a facility that complies with Good Manufacturing Practices.

In conversation with Nutraceuticals World, Kim Biedermann, PhD, discussed the development process behind the new formula.

“The development of Nutrafol Men 50+ was driven by both science and timing. After reviewing hundreds of studies, it was clear that hair thinning in men over 50 is influenced by multiple factors such as hormonal changes, oxidative stress, cellular aging, and nutrient absorption, rather than in a single pathway. At the same time we saw men becoming more proactive about aging and overall wellness, making it the right moment for a life-stage specific formula,” she said.

Saw palmetto, Moldavian dragonhead, and spermidine, for instance, each are widely used for broader longevity support. “Formulating for this demographic meant carefully balancing ingredients to work together, remain well-tolerated, and support he biological mechanisms most relevant after 50.”

Bidermann noted that the study on Nutrafol Men 50+ was the one of the company’s longest studies to date, spanning nine months, “to reflect the slower pace of biological change with aging.”

“Participants were evaluated through clinical assessments, digital photography, video, and self-reported questionnaires at multiple intervals, capturing both visible results and perceived improvements in hair quality, shedding, and scalp coverage. By the end of the study, 100% of men reported their hair looked and felt healthier, 84% saw thicker, fuller hair and less shedding, and 81% noted improved scalp coverage. The combination of a targeted population, rigorous design, and long duration strengthens the research and helps set Men 50+ apart from other products on the market.”
