Lonza Capsugel has entered into an agreement to integrate locally-generated wind power into operations at its Bornem site in Belgium, where it manufactures gelatin hard empty capsules. The long-term power purchase agreement with the renewable energy cooperative Beauvent reinforces the company’s commitment to sustainable manufacturing practices.

The agreement directly connects a nearby wind turbine to the Bornem site, which is projected to generate 14% of the site’s annual electricity needs. Combined with the site’s existing solar panels, approximately 25% of the site’s power is generated locally from renewable sources. The remaining 75% of the site’s power is sourced from an existing virtual power purchasing agreement, meaning that the site runs entirely on renewable energy. The company’s site in France also runs entirely on renewable energy, it reported.

“This project shows how local partnerships can deliver meaningful progress towards global sustainability goals,” said Peter Groenewege, head of Lonza Capsugel’s Bornem site. “By connecting nearby wind power to our operations, we are strengthening manufacturing resilience while advancing our long‑term decarbonization objectives. Our customers are increasingly focused on measurable sustainability action across the supply chain. Initiatives like this combine renewable energy generation with operational stability and long‑term cost predictability, enabling our customers to advance their own sustainability commitments with confidence.”
