Consumers who are taking GLP-1 receptor agonist drugs like Ozempic or Wegovy are strongly concerned about muscle loss during medication-assisted weight loss, and expressed strong interest in nutritional support to maintain muscle mass, according to a new consumer survey by Chemi Nutra.

The national survey relied on data from 548 consumers.

“GLP-1s are powerful tools, but they can leave a gap between the body people are living in and how they feel in it,” said Michael Petteruti, president. “Muscle preservation isn’t just a physical benefit, it’s part of helping people stay confident, capable, and connected to themselves through change.”

Key Findings

According to the company, GLP-1 users were strongly interested in muscle-protecting supplements during weight loss, with 78% stating they’re “definitely” or “very” interested.

Current users expressed the strongest awareness (64%) of the fact that GLP-1 drugs come with a risk of muscle loss, but less than half (46%) of users knew about this risk, highlighting a significant education gap in the market.

Interested in muscle protection was maintained in consumers who discontinued GLP-1 medications (71%), pointing to a lasting need for ongoing nutritional support.

Nearly half (47%) of current GLP-1 receptor agonist users reported emotional or mental side effects tied to rapid physical transformation.

According to Chemi Nutra, muscle protection is an essential part of its newly identified trend of “emotional anchoring,” the emotional scaffolding that supports identity and motivation during major transitions.
