SmartyPants Vitamins, a Unilever-acquired supplement brand, announced the launch of Prenatal Plus Multivitamin Capsules.

The new prenatal formula was formulated with board-certified OB-GYN, Dr. Michelle Tsai, who is a member of the company’s scientific advisory board.

The formula features easily-absorbed nutrients and an iron ingredient known for digestive tolerability. The formula is suited for pre-conception and pregnancy.

Many women of reproductive age don’t reach recommended intakes for several nutrients during pregnancy. Fewer than 10% of U.S. pregnant women reach recommended levels of choline, which has an essential role in fetal brain and spinal cord development.

National guidelines recommend 450-550 mg of choline per day during early pregnancy, spanning up to the first 12 weeks. However, the leading prenatal capsule formula delivers substantially lower amounts, according to the company. SmartyPants’ prenatal capsules provide 480 mg of choline per two-capsule serving: eight-times the amount present in the referenced prenatal capsule. The formula also utilizes easily-absorbed forms of nutrients, like folate in the form of methylfolate, B12 in the form of methylcobalamin, and stomach-friendly Ferrochel branded iron.

“We designed SmartyPants Prenatal Plus Multivitamin Capsules around the real-world needs of women and babies, and grounded in evidence-based nutrition science,” said Devyani Chaturvedi, senior nutrition research specialist at SmartyPants Vitamins. “Co-developed with a board-certified OB-GYN from our scientific advisory board, this formula reflects our commitment to thoughtful, science-driven formulations, going beyond iron and folate to prioritize other critical nutrients, like choline, that play an essential role in maternal and fetal development.”

The formula includes:

  • 480 mg choline to support fetal brain and spinal cord development
  • 667 mcg folate as methylfolate to support fetal nervous system development
  • 50 mg of DHA
  • Iodine to support fetal cognitive development
  • Additional research-backed nutrients for prenatal support

The formula features neutral scent technology for moms sensitive to nausea. Every batch is third-party tested, the company reported.

“We’re proud to offer a prenatal option shaped by scientific evidence and clinical judgment,” said Tsai. “In prenatal care, decisions should be guided by the strength of the evidence, not trends or convenience. Women deserve clear, high-quality formulas that reflect the latest research, especially during pregnancy, when nutrition is a critical part of clinical decision making.”
