A Cyperus rotundus extract marketed by Sabinsa as Cirpusins was found to support weight loss and body composition changes over placebo in a clinical study that enrolled 96 participants with obesity. The findings were published in Medicine.

Participants were randomized to receive either 500 mg of Ciprusins plus 5 mg of BioPerine for bioavailability twice daily for 90 days, or a placebo. All participants received recommendations for physical activity and diet. Compared to placebo, the supplement group saw a significant decrease in body weight, BMI, and waist/hip circumference. The supplement was found to be safe with no adverse effects.

“For over 30 years, Sabinsa has been a pioneering leader in weight management research, beginning with our early studies on Citrin,” said Shaheen Majeed, Sabinsa’s global CEO and managing director. “We confirmed early on that the traditional botanicals used in Ayurveda through the ages also provided benefits in related areas of concern for overweight individuals, such as lipid management. This published research adds to the body of science Sabinsa has been proud to produce over the decades.”

Other ingredients in Sabinsa’s weight management portfolio include ForsLean (Coleus forskolii), Citrin (Garcinia cambogia), GarCitrin (Garcinia cambogia standardized for garcinol and HCA), LeanGuard (proprietary blend of GarCitrin, ForsLean, and BioPerine), and Fabenol (Phaseolus vulgaris).
