PhytoGaia has announced plans to support a controlled eight-week clinical study evaluating the effects of PetGaia as an oral supplement on skin and coat health in dogs. The first-of-its-kind study will assess key parameters, including skin redness, dryness, itchiness, lesion formation, and coat shine, softness, shedding, and smoothness.

PetGaia is a natural palm fruit extract rich in tocotrienols, alpha-tocopherol, plant-derived squalene, and phytosterols, all of which are known for antioxidant and dermal-supporting properties. PetGaia is extracted via a non-chemical, non-solvent, and non-biodiesel process, ensuring clean-label compliance, allergen-free formulation, and high palatability, the company reported.

Preclinical and human research provide a scientific foundation for the use of tocotrienols and squalene in skin and hair support, the company noted.

The eight-week randomized, controlled trial in dogs will be the first of its kind in companion animals to assess skin and coat health.

“This eight-week controlled study is designed to generate robust, evidence-based data on PetGaia’s skin effects in dogs. Working with a renowned contract research organization ensures the trial is scientifically rigorous, producing insights that formulators and manufacturers can confidently use in product development and claim substantiation,” said Ariati Aris, PhD, scientific affairs specialist at PhytoGaia.

“As the owner of a French bulldog and Bichon FrisĂ©, I’ve seen first-hand how sensitive skin can be, especially in my Frenchie who is prone to food reactions and coat issues,” said Bryan See, vice president of PhytoGaia. “This personal experience motivates me to support this study. PetGaia is a natural, science-backed approach to improving skin and coat health, and as such, I’m excited to see how the results can benefit both pets and the brands that formulate with it.”

PhytoGaia is a preferred supplier of the National Animal Supplement Council, reflecting its commitment to quality, safety, and transparency in the pet nutrition industry.
