Cyvex Nutrition announced a sales partnership with SloIron Inc. to distribute SloIron, a plant-based ferritin iron ingredient designed to improve consumer experience and compliance, reduce formulation challenges, and simplify product development.

Iron deficiency is a widespread nutritional challenge, and many consumers struggle with traditional iron supplements due to gastrointestinal side effects. These challenges contribute to low compliance and create a gap in the market for iron ingredients that improve these outcomes, the company noted.

SloIron, derived from legumes, is a natural, legume-derived ferritin-iron structure. The iron is “caged” in protein to create a stable biomineral called ferrihydrite, which allows SloIron to pass through the stomach intact. Once in the gut, the ferritin shell is absorbed whole through a pathway known as receptor-mediated endocytosis. Because iron remains intact throughout digestion, it avoids contact with the gut lining, which minimizes irritation and supports a gentle, digestion-friendly experience, the companies noted. This natural structure also slows the release of iron, delivering a steady supply.

The ingredient offers formulators and brands a consumer-friendly alternative to harsh iron salts and chelates. Its neutral taste and odor; compatibility with vitamins, other minerals, and other active ingredients; and strong formulation flexibility make it suitable for several applications. The ingredient is supported by a human clinical trial, four preclinical animal safety studies, and three in vitro studies. SloIron supports improvements in hemoglobin, red blood cell quality, and serum ferritin, while maintaining regulated absorption even in the presence of competing iron sources, research suggests.

“Partnering with SloIron Inc. allows us to bring an innovative, plant-based iron solution to brands and formulators,” said Matthew Phillips, president of Cyvex. “SloIron is the answer for companies seeking an iron ingredient that combines efficacy with tolerability, helping improve consumer compliance and supporting successful product development.”
