A native type II collagen ingredient marketed as Collavant n2 by Bioiberica was found to reduce exercise-induced measures of cartilage breakdown in healthy adults, according to a new study. The findings, published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, suggest the ingredient can provide structural support to joints, in addition to prior research suggesting it helps with activity-related joint discomfort. The study is also the first to test the ingredient in healthy individuals.

Study Details

Over six months, participants either received 40 mg of Collavant n2 per day or a placebo. In a subpopulation of healthy adults with a higher level of discomfort, participants taking Collavant n2 experienced an 18.3% reduction in levels of CTX-II, a biomarker of cartilage breakdown, compared to an increase of 20.6% in those taking a placebo.

“This is the first-ever time we have shown this effect of native type II collagen in healthy people,” said Daniel Martinez-Puig, head of R&D for human and animal health at Bioiberica and lead scientist of the study. “Previously, we demonstrated that Collavant n2 supported faster recovery and functionality in active individuals. Now, we have evidence of its effects at the cartilage level through the reduction of CTX-II, a byproduct of type II collagen degradation, considered one of the most tested and validated biochemical markers of cartilage degradation.”

According to prior mechanism of action research, the ingredient works by modulating the immune response against its own type II collagen, thereby helping to maintain long-term joint health in healthy, active individuals.

Bioiberica’s Collavant n2 is sourced from chicken sternum and is 100% sourced and manufactured in Europe. Seven scientific studies support its potential role in joint health. The ingredient is also the first collagen to become NutraStrong Collagen Verified, a certification created by SGS Nutrasource and endorsed by the Collagen Stewardship Alliance.
