Oceanium, a UK-based biotech company, has launched Ocean Actives H+, a seaweed-derived ingredient clinically studied to exhibit prebiotic benefits. Unlike traditional prebiotic fibers, which require high doses and often cause digestive issues, the ingredient can exhibit beneficial effects on the microbiome at a dose of just 250 mg per day.

“Consumers kept telling us that although their prebiotics work, they couldn’t handle the effects,” said Neil Waslidge, R&D manager at Oceanium. “Our seaweed extract changes that, as one tiny dose gives you powerful gut health benefits with 87% less gas production.”

A 12-week double-blind study published in Microorganisms found that, compared to placebo, supplementation with the seaweed extract was associated with:

  • A 29% reduction in harmful bacteria linked to bloating and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.
  • Nearly a nine-fold improvement in the ratio of beneficial to harmful bacteria
  • A 20% increase in butyrate production
  • A 33% stronger response in beneficial inflammatory-modulating biomarkers
  • Significant growth of beneficial bacterial strains that have associations with immunity and cholesterol management

In addition to these findings on digestive health, previous clinical studies suggest that Ocean Actives H+ may support immunity, skin health, mood/mental clarity, and blood sugar regulation, Oceanium reported.

Ocean Actives H+ is sourced from Saccharina Latissima, a sustainably-farmed kelp that sequesters carbon and excess nutrients in the ocean.

“Consumers increasingly want products that benefit both personal and planetary health,” said Karen Scofield Seal, CEO and co-founder of Oceanium. “Our seaweed farming partners are essentially carbon-negative food producers, which aligns perfectly with sustainability-focused brands.”

Ocean Actives H+ is water-soluble and suitable for capsules, gummies, beverages, and functional foods. It has self-affirmed GRAS status in the U.S. and is ready for commercial use. The company is conducting additional studies on a range of health benefits.
