Two recently published scientific reviews provide additional support for the role of HMB, a metabolite of the amino acid leucine, in supporting muscle health.

HMB has been evidenced in many studies to stimulate muscle protein synthesis and inhibit breakdown, offering protection against age-related muscle loss and functional decline.

“The global population is aging rapidly, and consumers are increasingly looking for proactive solutions to stay strong, mobile and independent. Brands must meet this shift head-on. Ingredients such as HMB, with clinically confirmed benefits, offer an incredible opportunity to deliver meaningful support to the 50+ demographic,” said Shawn Baier, MS, MBA, vice president of business development at TSI Group, the manufacturer of the ingredient myHMB.

Meta-Analysis Highlights Optimal Dosage

A meta-analysis published in Frontiers in Nutrition sought to determine the optimal dosage of HMB on muscle-related indicators.

A total of 21 randomized controlled trials were included, involving a total of 1935 participants, all of whom were greater than 50 years old. Researchers confirmed a link between HMB and significant improvements in muscle mass, strength, and physical function. The strongest effects were observed with a dose of 3 grams per day over a period of 12 weeks or longer. According to TSI Group, the findings provide clear, actionable guidance on dosage and duration for healthcare professionals, product formulators, and consumers.

“This new meta-analysis validates what we at TSI have been championing for years: HMB is a scientifically proven ingredient that supports muscle health and function as we age,” said Baier. “We’ve long understood the critical role HMB plays in addressing age-related muscle loss, and it’s rewarding to see the clinical community continue to affirm that.”

Review on Sarcopenia

A review published in Nutrients provided additional support for the role of HMB in treating sarcopenia, which was recently recognized as a disease under the ICD-10.

“HMB may be an effective supplement for maintaining muscle mass, strength, and function, particularly in the elderly and in patients experiencing conditions that predispose them to muscle loss, such as chronic diseases, physical inactivity, or aging,” the authors concluded.

They stated the recommended 3-gram daily dose of HMB is practically impossible to achieve through diet and suggested, “Proper HMB supplementation is necessary to achieve anabolic and anti-catabolic effects, especially in the context of sarcopenia or muscle recovery.”

“At TSI, we believe innovation means staying ahead of the curve while also ensuring the science stands behind the story. HMB is no longer just a promising ingredient. It’s a proven solution for one of the most pressing health challenges of our time: preserving muscle and quality of life as we age,” said Baier.
