In this interview with Nutraceuticals World, Shaheen Majeed, Global CEO and Managing Director of Sabinsa, discussed the company’s vertically integrated business model, global supply chain resilience, scientific innovation, and the legacy of its founder, Dr. Muhammed Majeed.

Sabinsa’s proactive approach to supply chain management began in 2005, when the company started directly engaging with farmers to secure high-quality botanical raw materials and diversify agricultural sourcing beyond India. By establishing international warehouses and absorbing tariff impacts where possible, Sabinsa ensures consistent global supply of its standardized nutraceutical ingredients.

Majeed emphasized the company’s vertical integration, which extends from soil to shelf, cultivating crops, manufacturing in audited facilities, and distributing finished ingredients to markets worldwide. This transparency and traceability help build customer confidence amid growing expectations for verified sourcing and quality.

At SupplySide Global, Sabinsa showcased its international team, reinforcing the company’s expanding presence across Europe, APAC, and the Americas. Bringing global leaders together enables deeper partnerships with customers pursuing cross-border growth in the dietary supplement market.

On innovation, Majeed explained Sabinsa’s unique blend of traditional wisdom and modern science. The company’s R&D team studies ancient Ayurvedic texts to identify historical uses of botanicals like turmeric, ashwagandha, and boswellia, then investigates their active molecular components through modern analytical science. Once bioactive compounds are identified, Sabinsa conducts pilot production, standardization, clinical validation, and IP protection, creating patented, consistent, and clinically substantiated ingredients.

Majeed also reflected on his late father’s legacy. Dr. Muhammed Majeed, a pharmacist by training, founded Sabinsa in the 1980s with a mission to standardize botanical actives and validate their efficacy through clinical research, a pioneering concept at the time. His commitment to authenticity, science, and IP protection led to over 500 patents and 100+ human clinical trials, including the landmark Curcumin C3 Complex®, which remains a benchmark for turmeric extracts.

Sabinsa continues to advance this legacy by maintaining scientific rigor, supporting sustainable farming, and providing customers with traceable, research-backed ingredients.
