Company Mission: “To empower health care practitioners to change lives and improve quality of life the way nature intended. Guided by this mission, we continue to work toward our vision of being the preferred and widely accessible source of high-quality, whole food-based nutritional supplements. By combining nearly a century of heritage with modern innovation, we aim to make nutrient-dense, whole food nutrition available to more practitioners and the patients they serve.”

Standard Process was founded in 1929 by Dr. Royal Lee, who believed the best source of nutrition comes directly from whole foods. His vision to support health by preserving the natural complexity of nutrients found in plants continues to guide the company today.

From its beginnings on a small farm in Wisconsin to becoming a vertically integrated company with an 868-acre certified-organic farm, Standard Process has remained family-owned and operated. Across four generations of leadership, the company upholds Dr. Lee’s legacy while innovating to meet the needs of modern practitioners and patients.

“In today’s dietary supplement market our position is unique,” said Simone DuBois, senior director of business development. “We combine nearly a century of whole food-based nutrition expertise with ongoing investments in science, research, and organic and regenerative agriculture. This balance of heritage and innovation allows us to remain a trusted leader while addressing the evolving health challenges that we face today.”

Meeting Demand & Managing Challenge

In recent years, Standard Process has been shaped by growing consumer demand for whole food-based supplements, advances in nutritional science, and increasing awareness of the role nutrition plays in long term wellness, DuBois said.

“Like many in our industry, we’ve also navigated challenges brought on by shifting global conditions, including supply chain pressures and changing regulatory environments,” she added.

“Our approach has been to stay true to our core values, investing in organic and regenerative agriculture, carefully stewarding our ingredient supply, and maintaining vertically integrated production. These commitments have allowed us to reduce vulnerability to external pressures, support consistent product quality, and remain adaptable as the economic and political climate evolves.”

Standard Process is a practitioner-first brand, focused on educating and working with practitioners who recommend products to their patients.

“Most Standard Process sales happen in practitioner offices,” said DuBois. “We do utilize Amazon from a defensive perspective, through an authorized seller, to uphold our mission and values, protecting our brand and providing correct and current product information. Standard Process also partners with practitioners to help them sell through their websites, or sites we create for them. These practitioner websites are our preferred avenue for e-commerce sales.”

The company’s education platform, called “WholisticMatters,” aims to empower practitioners by providing them with knowledge and practical skills. “We offer a diverse range of resources, including articles, continuing education courses, and a captivating podcast series,” said DuBois. “WholisticMatters seamlessly weaves traditional wisdom with modern science, fostering a holistic approach to health and wellness.”

Innovation and R&D

As a vertically integrated supplement company, Standard Process oversees every aspect of quality, from soil health to the production of finished products.

“Building on that foundation, and with continued investment in research, we’re able to develop new crops, harvesting techniques, and technological innovations that help us produce some of the most nutrient-dense organic ingredients in the marketplace,” said DuBois.

The company’s Nutrition Innovation Center (NIC) in Kannapolis, NC, combines traditional breeding methods with advanced analysis of plant nutrition, she noted. “Our scientists are developing innovative crop solutions to address human health challenges, and in some cases these proprietary seed lines yield 2-8 times the nutrient levels compared to typical crops.”

NIC employs more than 20 scientists with expertise spanning nutrition discovery, translational research, horticulture, product development, and clinical studies.

“Their work focuses on maximizing nutrients of our farm-grown ingredients and enhancing them with innovative processing methods — all with the goal of delivering validated clinical outcomes that support patients’ health,” said DuBois.

While organic and regenerative farming methods may be getting more attention today, they are not new to Standard Process, which has been farming responsibly since its founding to preserve farmland and ensure a healthy future, she added. “Caring for the land and its crops is central to our identity and our ability to provide whole food, nutrient-dense solutions.”

Pet Health

Standard Process has a substantial pet health portfolio, and noted strong growth in functional health products for aging pets, with demand for joint, digestive, and cognitive support.

“Personalization is also key,” said DuBois. “Owners and veterinarians are looking for breed, age, and lifestyle specific options backed by science. At the same time, economic pressures are driving interest and value-driven formats like subscriptions and loyalty programs. We are seeing that digital and veterinary channels are expanding rapidly, with platforms such as Chewy and Amazon reshaping access.”

Education and values matter more than ever, she added. “Consumers want brands that provide credible learning resources and reflect sustainability and social impact. Standard Process vet lines are intentionally focusing on these areas — from science-backed, condition-specific formulas to education and sustainable practices to meet evolving consumer and practitioner needs.”

New products this year include SP Red Food and Whole Food Folate.

New Products and Education

This year the company introduced two formulas that DuBois said reflect its commitment to whole food-based supplementation and fill gaps in the marketplace.

“Whole Food Folate delivers folate in its naturally occurring form, including plants grown on the Standard Process certified-organic farm. This product provides a whole food-based alternative to synthetic folic acid supporting practitioners who want to offer their patients folate the way nature intended.”

SP Red Food, launched this September, offers a broad spectrum of red phytonutrients that are often missing from modern diets, including farm-grown, organic, whole red beetroots and mountain spinach (Atriplex hortensis), and astaxanthin from whole microalgae that together support muscle, metabolic, and cardiovascular health.

In line with its commitment to education, the company is hosting a virtual symposium on “Whole Systems Nutrition” this October, led by keynote speaker Dr. Deanna Minich, who will bring together thought leaders to explore the systems behind nutrient deficiency and whole food quality. Sessions will highlight the ripple effects of soil depletion and heavily processed foods on human health and how these challenges ultimately impact the future of whole system food-based nutrition.

In 2026 the company will also debut a regional symposium, Healthspan Revolution: Holistic Strategies for Aging Well.

“This event will bring practitioners together around whole food nutrition, herbs, and lifestyle interventions that support vitality, resilience, and independence as people live longer lives. It reflects our belief that the future of health is not just about extending years, but about improving quality of life during them.”

For the Future

Looking ahead, Standard Process will continue to focus on advancing whole food-based solutions in a world where heavily processed diets continue to challenge health, said DuBois.

“What concerns us most is the widening gap between modern lifestyles and nutrient-dense foods — but what excites us is the opportunity to bridge that gap through innovation
and education.”
